Confidence

Every place in the point forecast carries a word about how far to trust its distance: reliable, provisional or speculative.

The forecast for a day changes as new weather comes in. Some places settle early; others keep moving, or sit on the edge of working, where a small change in the weather makes a big difference. The confidence word tells you which kind of place you are looking at.

  • Reliable: the forecast has settled. Plan with it.
  • Provisional: it may still change. Plan, but check again later.
  • Speculative: expect it to move. Use it to see that a day may be worth watching, not to decide.

Days far ahead are naturally less certain, so the words are stricter there.
